Homeowners often face unique challenges when designing outdoor living spaces, and this recent project perfectly illustrates how a little creativity can transform a functional problem into a stunning design feature. My clients, Brian and Wendy, were experiencing a common issue in her covered patio outdoor kitchen: soot accumulation on the white stucco wall above the gas BBQ grill. What could have been a frustrating maintenance problem became an opportunity for a truly unique design solution.

After exploring traditional options (tile), I suggested an innovative approach using distressed metal roofing panels. Unable to source reclaimed materials through local marketplaces, I suggested an aging technique to give brand new galvanized panels an authentic, weathered look. The process involved a carefully applied acid spray followed by hydrogen peroxide (the oxidizer), creating a beautifully aged patina that looks like it’s been part of the landscape for years.

Installation was a thoughtful process. I attached the panels using roofing screws and construction adhesive, ensuring a secure and lasting finish. To address a slight size discrepancy, we framed the panels with reclaimed barn wood from our workshop, adding even more rustic character to the project.

Wendy was absolutely thrilled with the results. “I’m completely blown away,” she shared. “Scott did an amazing job on our patio feature wall.  He took our vision of a rustic metal farmhouse look, and created a beautiful masterpiece that far exceeded our expectations, paying great attention to detail.  We look forward to hiring him for our next project.”
